Fiddler Crab

The Fiddler Crab images below were rendered in carbon dust, a medium was used extensively in medical illustration in the past but has largely fallen out of use. Carbon dust is made by sanding down the cores of carbon pencils into a fine powder, which is then applied by paintbrush to the paper surface. It is very delicate and can easily be ruined by the slightest contact with moisture. Although frustrating and slow at first, after some experimentation with different papers and brushes I began to appreciate the dark blacks and smooth transitions in values that are characteristic of this technique.
